What is the AO3 Rice Purity Test?

The AO3 Rice Purity Test (also known as the Rice Purity Test AO3 version) is a fun, fan-made spin-off of the classic internet purity test. However, instead of measuring your real-life experiences, this 100-question quiz is designed entirely for the fanfiction community.

It tests your habits on the Archive of Our Own (AO3) platform, checking which tropes you read, how you interact with authors, and whether you’ve ventured into the darkest, most angst-filled tags the archive has to offer.

How Does the AO3 Purity Test Work?

Just like the original survey, you start with a perfect score of 100. As you read through the 100 questions, check the box for every fanfic habit you have done. Have you read a 100k+ word slow burn? Check. Have you ignored a “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” warning? Check. For every box ticked, your score drops by one point.

AO3 Purity Test Score Meaning

Curious about what your final number says about your reading habits? Here is the complete score scale:

• 90 – 100 (The Casual Reader): You occasionally read a fanfiction here and there, usually sticking to G or T-rated fluff. You are as pure as they come!
• 70 – 89 (The Regular): You know your way around the filtering system. You have your favorite ships and tropes, and you consistently leave kudos.
• 40 – 69 (The Dedicated Fan): You live on the archive. You have stayed up until 4 AM reading a 50k word Enemies-to-Lovers fic, and your bookmarks are completely full.
• 0 – 39 (The Archive Gremlin): You fear no tags! If your score is this low, you have read explicit fics, heavy angst, and perhaps even written your own massive stories. You are the backbone of the fandom.
